Heritage-Led Regeneration in Action

The AABC Annual Conference 2025 took place on 9 October at the beautiful Grade 1 listed Bradford Cathedral, bringing together accredited conservation architects and heritage professionals from across the UK. With Bradford celebrating its year as UK City of Culture, the setting could not have been more appropriate for this year’s theme: Heritage-Led Regeneration.

Engaging Talks and Discussions

The day began with the AABC Annual General Meeting, before moving into a series of four thought-provoking lectures.

  • Ulrike Knox opened with a talk on Cathedrals, sharing insights from her ongoing work at Bradford Cathedral.

  • Kate Martyn followed with an overview of Heritage-Led Regeneration, exploring national trends and challenges.

  • Richard Middleton then discussed Bradford’s regeneration journey, highlighting the city’s ambitious heritage initiatives.

  • Finally, Tim Ronalds presented the story of Bradford Live, charting the transformation of a former cinema into a vibrant live music venue.

Each talk was followed by lively audience Q&As, generating thoughtful debate and valuable professional exchange.

Exploring Bradford First-Hand

In the afternoon, delegates took part in one of three guided tours, each led by one of the morning’s speakers:

  1. Bradford Cathedral – with Ulrike Knox

  2. Bradford Live – with Tim Ronalds

  3. Bradford Heritage Action Zone – with Richard Middleton

These visits offered members the chance to see conservation and regeneration projects in context — bringing the conference theme vividly to life.

A Day to Remember

The event was praised for its engaging speakers, collaborative spirit, and inspiring setting.
AABC extends its thanks to all presenters, organisers, and hosts who made the day such a success. Plans are already underway for the AABC Annual Conference 2026, and members are encouraged to look out for further details soon.

We Need More Mentors!

Join the AABC Mentorship Scheme

Over the past year, the AABC Mentorship Scheme has continued to grow, connecting experienced conservation architects with those at the start of their professional journey. The feedback from mentees has been inspiring — many have said that having a mentor has given them confidence, direction, and a deeper understanding of what it means to work in conservation practice.

As the program expands, we’re now seeking more mentors to meet the growing number of mentees eager to learn from your experience.

Why Become a Mentor?

As a registered architect, your knowledge, insight, and lived experience are invaluable. By becoming a mentor, you can:

  • Shape the future – Guide emerging architects as they develop their careers, offering support on professional growth, accreditation, and project experience.

  • Share your expertise – Help mentees navigate the real challenges of conservation work, from technical details to collaboration and problem-solving.

  • Build lasting connections – Mentorship is a two-way exchange: you’ll inspire others while gaining fresh ideas and perspectives in return.

What’s Involved?

The mentorship is designed to be flexible and work around your schedule — whether that’s occasional virtual meetings, phone calls, or in-person discussions.

The AABC team provides guidance and resources to support you throughout the process, along with regular check-ins and opportunities to connect with fellow mentors and mentees.

How to Get Involved

If you’d like to make a meaningful contribution to the next generation of conservation architects, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s New in Conservation

Historic England has published new guidance on the risk of flooding in historic and traditional buildings. There new advice explores how the historic environment might mitigate or adapt to flooding to ensure its resilience. It also includes information on energy efficiency, insurance, and repairs and drying.

One in four buildings are at risk of flooding, and this figure is likely to increase as the effects of climate change intensify.
