2024 Conference - Rochdale Town Hall

The recent AABC Conference held at the iconic Rochdale Town Hall brought together leading voices in conservation for an immersive day focused on the restoration of this historic landmark. The Conference delivered a blend of expert talks and hands-on experiences, offering a unique insight into the complexities and triumphs of architectural conservation.

The day began with an illuminating presentation about the extensive work on Rochdale Town Hall's restoration. The presentation covered the strategies and challenges involved in maintaining the building's historical integrity while integrating essential updates, such as new M&E systems, improved access and new lifts.

Next, Hirst Conservation captivated the audience with a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of The Great Hall's ceiling. The detailed presentation on materials, techniques, and unexpected discoveries underscored the high level of craftsmanship required to restore such a unique space. Attendees gained a greater appreciation for the complexities of working on heritage interiors and the meticulous planning needed to execute such projects successfully.

One of the most engaging sessions of the day was from Keith Barley of Barley Studios, who shared reflections on his remarkable 50-year career in glass conservation. His stories from projects across the UK were both nostalgic and inspiring, giving the audience a rare glimpse into the evolution of conservation techniques over the decades and his personal journey within the field.

The Conference took a hands-on turn in the afternoon with guided tours of the Rochdale Town Hall restoration project. Attendees had the chance to see the day's topics come to life, observing completed works throughout the building. Expert-led interactive demonstrations by Lancashire Conservation Studios and North West Lead provided a closer look at the craftsmanship involved, from leadwork to delicate material repairs, adding practical depth to the morning's presentations.

This Conference was a celebration of craftsmanship, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protecting our cultural heritage, and we are delighted to have received positive feedback.

"Great conference at Rochdale, super tours and insightful talks on the paint cleaning, conservation, and stained glass."

There was also prosecco and a slice of cake at lunchtime to celebrate 25 years of the AABC! Thank-you to all those who took part and made the day possible

Victorian Society Committee Members

The Victorian Society (Manchester Region) is looking for new committee members. They are keen to hear from people who could bring fresh skills and experience to the committee. Particularly welcome would be interest from candidates at an early point in their career who are considering a career in heritage or who feel they can offer something different in terms of their background or experience.

Equally relevant to the vacancy could be specialist skills in fields such as marketing, events organisation or a particular interest in broadening the outreach of the group to engage with all those who live, work and play in the region’s spectacular Victorian built environment.

The committee meets bi-monthly, with approximately 2 hours a week of input required outside of this. The group hosts a series of lectures, walks, and talks throughout the year, and your attendance is encouraged but not essential to those of interest.

The group is committed to diversity and inclusivity and involving new audiences. Mentoring from an existing committee member can be offered if it is useful.

For a conversation or to express interest, please contact Kate Martyn, Chairperson, at kate.martyn@insall-architects.co.uk
